When Texas plumbing licenses renew
Licenses renew annually. A first license gets a random expiration date 6 to 18 months after the exam is passed; journeyman and master licenses held together share one expiration date, so only the master renewal fee is paid. TSBPE awards credit only for a 6-hour CPE course from a provider the Board approves. The board's phone number, printed on its License Types page, is (512) 936-5200.
Continuing education hours
The Texas source sets 3 different CE rules depending on the license held. The "per year" column divides the hours by the length of the CE period so states with different cycles can be compared.
| License holders | Hours | Period | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master plumbers (with or without the responsible master plumber designation), journeyman plumbers and tradesman plumber-limited | 6 | each year | 6 |
| Apprentices with an endorsement | 6 | each year | 6 |
| Medical gas piping installation endorsement | 2 | every 3 years | 0.7 |
Master plumbers (with or without the responsible master plumber designation), journeyman plumbers and tradesman plumber-limited. 6 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) before the license can be renewed.
Apprentices with an endorsement. Apprentice registration holders take the 6 hours only if they hold an endorsement.
Medical gas piping installation endorsement. 2 hours of CPE every three years.
Renewal fees
The TSBPE pages read print no renewal or late fee amounts.
Exemptions and conditions
- Apprentice registration holders without an endorsement have no CPE requirement.
How Texas compares
Counted per year, the heaviest CE load on this Texas page is 6 hours. Of the 7 renewal rules this site has read, that ranks 4 of 7 from most to fewest hours a year (MA electrical 7 h a year; CT plumbing 2.5 h a year). Comparing hours a year is rough: a state with a longer cycle lets the hours be taken in one block, and several states set lower figures for limited or apprentice licenses, as the table above shows.
All renewal rules read so far: trade license renewal by state.
Getting the Texas license in the first place
Renewal keeps an existing license current; it does not replace the initial requirements. For a first license: Master Plumber: 6 years of experience at minimum, plus an exam. The Texas plumbing license requirements page lists every level, the experience hours, the exam and the fees from the Texas board.
